Busy last days....

With Jane and I BOTH leaving New York the next day, we decided to make the most of our last full day here.

We went shopping in Soho for some last minute purchases for Jane. Then escaped the sunshowers to 23rd on the east side to check out the famous Flatiron Building and Bryant Park.

Continued up Manhattan Island to see Grand Central Station which such a beautiful piece of architecture. The Chrysler building on our left side, we continued down to 42nd and 1st Ave to see the United Nations building on the river. Not as impressive as portrayed in movies like the Interpreter, but I think it is more about the ideals that the building stands for. No deligate spotting this time around.

Then we hopped on yet another subway to the upper east side to the BEST cupcake place I have discovered (thanks to Lauren!) since being here. Magnolia? Two Little Red Hens leaves it at the start line. We enjoyed red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting mmmmmmmmm delish!

On our way home we overheard the New York Philharmonic were playing a free summer show in Central Park, so a quick detour and we were under the setting sun chilling out in the great lawn listening to some great music.

What a day!

Chicago!

Its all true, the stage show is ten times better than the movie. And tonight I got to understand that fact first hand.
Jane and I got front row seats, on the cheap (woohoo), and spent our evening being entertained by an amazingly talented cast and orchestra!
I cannot wait to get out there and see some more shows! There are lots of new shows just hitting Broadway so its a great time to be here thats for sure

Little Italy & Chinatown

After MoMa Jane and I decided to check out Little Italy for lunch. I had tried as Zagat reviews "the best pizza in the world" and thought Jane had to try it before leaving for New Zealand.

Lombardi's in 1905 became America's FIRST pizzeria, and if its good enough for frequenters like Jack Nicholson, its good enough for me! And boy was it scrumptious!

After that we walked off the calories down the street, with some Pinkberry (latest dessert craze here) hand and searched for some decent fakes in Chinatown. All the good places had been shut down and taken to courts, so I will have to venture there again another time.

MoMA

A rainy grey day sent us in the direction of the Museum of Modern Art down near 5th Ave.

I really enjoyed the levels of paintings by greats like Pollock, Matisse and Monet. Not to mention that top of the charts favourite Pablo Picasso.

Really excited as from next month MoMa will be housing a special exhibition of Salvidor Dali's works. I cannot wait!!!
Level 3 was wicked, there was special yellow lighting that sucked colour out of everyone....check out the photos...

Blondie

Last night I headed to the tourist infested Times Square to the Nokia Theatre to see the pioneers of early American punk rock and new wave scenes, BLONDIE!

Debbie Harry is still an amazing fiesty front woman, and Chris Stein was truly spectacular on guitar. Not to mention the drummer who would flip one stick up into the air and catch it after each song.

Tide is High, Atomic, Heart of Glass Rapture, One Way Or Another, they were all there and amazing live, with some variations to each song to keep them up beat and now.

She surprised us in the encore with a punk rock version of Celine Dion's famous My Heart Will Go On. I much prefer the cover!!!!

The grass is greener....

I left the grey rain clouds behind at Manhattan today and walked across the Brooklyn Bridge at last with Jane. We enjoyed the views and wonderful breeze. Over the other side in Brooklyn, the grass was indeed greener. Sunshine, great weather and a whimsical walk through Cobble hill. Fantastic little area a friend told me about. GREAT way to spend your Sunday I say!

Taking Jane to West Village

Decided yesterday Jane just had to check out one of my favourite parts of Manhattan, the West Village. It was so peaceful as usual. Jane got a great bargain at Cynthia Rowley! Lunch at the Spotted Pig mmmmmmmm a great gastropub with unique stylings.

Then we went along the boardwalk with Jersey across the river.

Fantastic day in the sunshine :-)

London's calling....

Well good news came this past week, and after much pondering on a big decision, I decided carpe diem!

I have been invited to stay until August/September at Press Office and help them before, after, and during Fashion Week!!!

So I am leaving for London on Wednesday for a week, where I will hang out with a great friend of mine Shelley. Then fly back with her (refreshing my 90 days) and be back in time for Independence Day celebrations!

ONE MONTH!

I cannot believe I have already been here ONE whole month already! Its gone by so quickly, but I have seen and done so much in this short amount of time.....but this is still so much to see and do :-)

Hi Carrie, I'm home!!!

While in the West Village, before enjoying a deliciously bizarre milky way latte at a great little organic coffee cafe I discovered the building frontage they used for Carrie Bradshaw's apartment in Sex & The City.

Apparently Sarah Jessica lives in the West Village. Did my knees buckle a bit at that comment....perhaps :-P

Ground Zero & Financial District

A sombre atmostphere surrounds ground zero, where the twin towers fell in 2001. They are working on redeveloping the area into a memorial and stand to say that they will not let terrorists get the better of them! It was really sad though.

Then a change of scene at battery park with views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The sun was shining and there was a great breeze in the air.

From there I checked out the financial district and Wall Street and City Hall.

Visitor Jane

Jane finally arrived, after delays and lost luggage. WELCOME to the BIG APPLE

Jane! We hit 5th Ave on Sunday, after a traditional brunch first at Eatery no less.

Jane put my efforts to shame, and within an hour on 5th Ave walked out of Saks with two pairs of shoes! Mmmmm Jimmy Choos hehe.

There was a great ethnic food market on 6th Ave. The smells were amazing, and they have closed off part of the avenue which was pretty cool.

Spotted at JFK

While waiting hours for Jane's luggage to arrive at JFK, I spotted three of the cast from GOSSIP GIRL!

Blake Lively who plays Serena van der Woodsen, Penn Badgley who plays Dan Humphrey
and Sebastian Stan who plays Carter Baizen in a couple of episodes.
The most interesting thing to note was that Blake and Penn are a couple in real life!

Levi's Girls Night Event

Tonight I was invited to a private event/party with Press Office and Levi's. Over 100 female editors of fashion publications such as Nylon, Teen Vogue and Preen were invited to come and chill at the decked out Levi's store on 14th, drink & eat gorgeous cupcakes and try on as much as they could and walk out with some FREE pieces. The aim was to alert editors that Levi's is a good option for women as well as men. Good marketing tactic, and lots of fun!

I met some interns from Levi's, who were all from interstate USA. They were all pretty nice so we hope to meet up soon!

This just in, overheard at the entrance to Levi's as the party wrapped up, Cathy saying "Lylle, you're our best intern, let's do dinner next week when I get back!"

Oh and did I mention that I got a free Levi's outfit also?

Lanvin and other goodies

Today I went shopping in Chelsea and Soho. Its sale time, so time to make the most of it!

At last I tracked down a place that stocks Lanvin eyewear! They didn't have the style I was looking for, it had sold out, BUT one of the staff members had the exact pair, so I tried them and then ordered myself a pair. And WAY cheaper than what Optiko quoted me at CHRISTMAS 2007!
I also picked up some Phillip Lim black patent sandals, a Phillip Lim tee-shirt and Issey Miyake Intense fragrance.

5th Ave Adventures

After a weekend of sunbaking, mild shopping, extreme heat, and a parade on 5th Ave for Puerto Ricans, I decided to hit 5th Ave properly on Monday.

I went in search of only two things. Lanvin sunnies I have been waiting to arrive in Brisbane since Christmas, and some more Mario Badescu skincare.

First I went to Mario Badescu's head office by accident. Nice detour though.

Went to every department store on 5th in search of the damn Lanvins; - Bloomingdales, Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and Barneys...but no luck.

The Apple store was super cool, I almost walked out with a new laptop! And I got my MB at Henri Bendel :-)

New addiction....Gossip Girl

In between sunbaking in Central park, a healthy organic lunch, and shopping on 5th Ave...another way to pass time, and learn more about this superb city has come to my attention....let the addiction begin!
The series is about how the rich and privileged teens of the Upper East side live. Its very cool, and a huge hit here in the States!

M.I.A.

Well I just got back from the M.I.A concert......
It was at McCarren Park Pool over in Brooklyn. A wicked venue, basically the crowd was in the pool dugout, no water this time.
The opening act was the usual filler for the main prize to come. Not even worth mentioning.
Then came Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam and boy bring the POWER POWER!
The crowd was electrofied, and utterly entranced by her melodic beats.
For all of you M.I.A fans out there, you should relish in the fact that not only the DJ that worked on both of her albums, Diplo, but Afrikan Boy who appears on the song Hussel, were both present at the concert and performed! Ah yeah!Of all the concerts I have seen M.I.A at now this one far exceeded the others! It was a phenomenal show....
And maybe one of the best I've ever been to.....

American Museum of Natural History

Yesterday after a great night out seeing Walter Meego and THE PRESETS, I decided to have a quiet day at the museum.

The American Museum of Natural History was spectacular! So many things to take in, I'll have to make many visits to truly appreciate the volumes of knowledge inside.

My favourites were the Big Bang theory, and how Earth came to be, and then the dinasaur exhibit. There is something about fossils that are just so damn cool!

The littlest cupcake

Presets in Brooklyn

Last night Jacinta and I went over to Williamsburg to check out the aussie band, THE PRESETS!Tickets were only $15 suckers!

We arrived just in time for HAPPY HOUR so had a couple of drinks in the cool eerie bar downstairs.
The crowd was not what like what you might see at a Presets gig in Brisbane. It was all muso's and indie types. No teenyboppers in sight! Thank goodness for that!
The opening act was a local band called Walter Meego. They were actually pretty damn good, and nothing like I had expected. The long haired lead singer, who looked like an indie version of Dean Gyer (lol) had a set of lungs on him like on of the petshop boys, and the man on keyboard reminded me of Warren from Fossil (shout out to my fossil crew hehe).

Then it was the Presets turn, and boy did they ROCK the small intimate venue! The crowd loved them and they played for what seemed like forever, but still not long enough.

We made friends with some cool guys in the crowd. They're over from Salt Lake City, also here for internships. Hopefully we'll hang out with them again as they were loads of fun!

How do you like it how do you like it?

More free samples of Umbro by Kim Jones yesterday at Press Office Ltd!

I couldn't help myself, there is a big box and Cathy the director said to help myself as the rest would be disposed of.

And we all know my love for footwear hahaha.

I saw it before YOU!

Last night Jacinta, Jean-Pierre and I went and saw the Sex and The City movie.

The theatre was full to capacity, and everyone applauded when it began....after the 30 minutes or so of advertisements though!

A fantastic movie, it wraps everything up, and most definitely lives up to all the hype.

And best of all.....I saw it before all of you suckers in Australia hehehehe.

Brooklyn

I checked out Brooklyn yesterday, and what a difference to Manhattan. Got off at Bedford Ave, where one of my guide books suggested. Williamsburg is the new creative hub of Brooklyn and there is a cool vibe to the place, while being more laid back than fast paced Manhattan.
